Raja Harishchandra in1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke is known as the first ever silent feature film 
made in India. By the 1930s, the film industry in india was producing over 200 films per year.
The firstever Indian sound film is Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara in1931 was a very major commercial
 success.There was clearly a very huge market for talkies and musical plays. Bollywood films and all
 the regional film industries then quickly switched to sound filming.

The 1930's and 1940's were very hard times.India was buffeted by the many reasons such as 
Great Depression, the Indian independence movement,World War II, and the violence of the 
Partition. Most Bollywood films were running and unabashedly escapist, but there were also a
 whole number of  filmmakers who tackled through tough social issues, and also used to the 
struggle for Indian independence as a backdrop for their movie plots.

In 1937 Ardeshir Irani of Movie "Alam Ara" fame, made the firstever colour film in Hindi named 
as "Kisan Kanya".The next year he desided to made another colour/multicolor film, a version of 
"Mother India". However colour movies did not become a popular feature until the late years of 
1950s. At this time lavish and stunning romantic musicals and melodramas were the main parts
 of fare at the cinema.
